Sun to Part Sun 144" tall/2-4 foot spread (?); likes moisture/wetlands, but drought tolerant; attracts butterflies. Plant in back yard main bed in moist area Plant Delights for Delivery the week of March 6, 2005 (prepaid Jan. 2005); arrived 3/9 and planted 3/11. Growing as of late May 2005.
This moisture-loving perennial is not for the gardening faint-of-heart! As soon as visitors gaze upon this most spectacular native, they insist on purchasing one. Joe Pye Weed bursts from the ground with bamboo-like stalks that quickly ascend to 12?. In midsummer, this clumping perennial is topped with massive 1? wide smokey pink flower heads...the absolute favorite of butterflies! This is the true species, E. fistulosum, not one of the shorter species often sold as such in the trade.
9/1/05--bees and butterflies are constantly on this. Left seed heads up for winter. Doing well 2006. Maybe would like more water on dry side, but still blooming well.
