I have been keeping notes on the plants in my garden since we've been in our current home (the day after Thanksgiving 2003).  However, up until now I've kept the information in a basic Word table format.  I recently decided to use this blog as a way to better keep track of the data on particular plants. 

Since I have imported most of the posts (up through Sept. 20, 2006), the posts are going to look messy for a while.  Hopefully, I will eventually post a picture (or more) to go with each plant's entry.

Camellia, "Yuletide"

A friend of my Grandmother's, Erma, gave us a gift certificate to get a tree for my baby son Fergus.  We don't have a lot of room left for large trees, so I got this Camellia that grows to around 8 feet tall and blooms, hopefully,in December.  He can see it from his window in the Winter.  It came from the Portland Nursery.

Borago officinalis, Borage

Grown from seed (can't remember when started, probably 2006); reseeds itself enthusiastically.  Have both blue and white (2007) borage.

Planted in gravel in backyard in front of boatshed, confined by railroad ties area -- very dry.

Salvia x sylvestris 'May Night'

3 - June 2007, planted front of main bed, right side.  Full sun, 18-24 inches high; blooms summer; violet blue flowers.

Mandevilla x amabilis 'Rita Marie Green', Pink Parfait Mandevilla

From Fred Meyers June 2007, partial sun, 15-20 feet; evergreen vine in warmer climates, likely annual here; twining, pink flowers, water regularly.

Agastache Tutti Frutti Hyssop

2 planted South sunny side yard, deep pink flower spikes on 3-4 feet plant from July through September; butterflies and hummingbirds like it; sun to partial shade.  Drought tolerant once established.

Sedum spurium 'tricolor'

3 from Lowe's-May 2007?  All planted front edge of main backyard bed.  Variegated foliage with pink growth and pink flowers.  Full sun, early summer flowers; zones 4-9.  Tolerates dryness once established; 4" tall; 18" +spread (spreading).  Evergreen.

Cistus 'Snow Fire'

Evergreen shrub to 4 feet by 4 feet, full sun, tolerates poor soils; white flowers with red patches, drought tolerant.  Blooms most summer; will take pruning.  Pruned June 2007 to remove blooms; some browning leaves underneath.  Not sure when this was planted-possibly early 2007.

Leucanthemum x superbum 'Alaska' Shasta Daisy

18-24" - sun to part shade; pure white daisies from summer to frost; flowers rise to 36"; pinch for compact habit and more flowers; relatively drought tolerant.  Deadheading promotes blooming; divide 2-3 years.

Planted front edge of main bed near front of gazing ball.

Clematis 'Elsa Spath"

Rainyside description here.  Bought at Lowe's - planted behind Spiraea in backyard South bed (facing North).  Want to grow through the shrub.  Full-sun to semi-shade, top in sun; semi-moist; prune while dormant; 6-10 feet tall.  Late Spring to Summer (Fall?) flowering; violet-blue blooms.  Bought at Lowe's June 2007.

Remove dead/weak stems in late winter or early spring (type 2 pruning-do not cut down to the ground); make cuts just above buds.  From Germany (1891).

Prunella grandiflora, 'Bella Deep Rose' Self-Heal

6-8" tall, sun to part shade; blooms from midspring through fall; zones 4-8; attracts butterflies; easy to grow; planted front right side main bed in backyard (2) late Spring 2007.

Penstemon pinifolius, Pine Needle Beardtongue

Obtained at Milwaukie Farmer's Market June 2007.  Evergreen subshrub to 18" to 24"; needle leaves and orange-red flowers from June through September; full sun, gritty soil, low water; sw native; hardy to 10f.  Planted in gravel path in backyard.

Hebe 'Amy'

3-5 feet; purple flowers late summer into fall; full sun; zone 7/8.  Planted near front of front main bed to the right of dry river in groundcover.

Cyperus alternifolius, Umbrella Palm

Planted in container in back patio (no drainage).  Full sun to part shade; to 18-36" talll; water depth from 0-6."  Hardiness from 7-10.  Foliage plant.

Hebe 'Hinderwell"

18" by 18"; dark purple foliage; violet flowers from mid to late summers; zones 7-8; full sun.  Planted near front of main backyard bed in front of large daylily/surrounded by groundcovers.  Near another hebe as well.

Euphorbia dulcis 'Chameleon'

Planted in front of front bed in drier area; sun to light shade; purple foliage; dry-wet soil; tolerates poor soil.

Sedum, 'Purple Emperor'

Midsummer to fall bloom; sun; water weekly during dry spells; 15-18" tall; purple foliage with pink flowers; leave dried flowers up for fall/winter interests if aphids don't get them -- cut back in Spring to basal foliage.  Planted in South side bed near Elijah Blue fescues.

Aloysia triphylla, Lemon Verbena

Planted by rain barrel in gravel.  Full sun; blooms in summer; grows to 36" tall; lemon-scented leaves.  Borderline hardiness reported.  Needs some supplemental water.

Lithodora diffusa 'Grace Ward'

Kasch's April 15, 2007.  Full sun; blue flowers; low-growing; acid soil; see description at Paghat.  Planted in front of catnip near edge of front main bed in backyard.

Gaultheria shallon, Salal

"medium growing spreading evergreen broadleaf shrub"; height 2-10 feet; acid soil; white flowers; blue black edible berry.  Planted front yard strip April 15, 2007 - from Kasch's.

Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea'

Golden Japanese Barberry.  Bought at Kasch's April 15, 2007.    Deciduous hedge with bright yellow foliage; pale green late summer.  3-4 feet tall and wide. 

Brunnera macrophylla 'Hadspen Cream'

Kasch's - April 15, 2007.  Planted near other two Brunnera in backyard main bed - shady area.

Iberis sempervirens 'Snowflake'

Candytuft -5.  Planted in front sunny side yard near daylilies. 4" size from Kasch's.  Planted April 15th, 2007.  Evergreen perennial; white blooms in late spring to early summer.  8-10 inches tall.

Spiraea bumaida 'Goldflame'

2 - bought at Kasch's; "medium growing rounded deciduous broadleaf shrub."  Height and spread 3-4 feet; rose red flowers; sun or part shade.  Planted in gravel near multiple other spirea.

Dahlia, Unknown (Red)

Already in garden when we moved in; blooms late summer until frost.  About 5 feet tall.  Left in ground over Winter.

Dahlia, 'Baby Red'

Swan Island Dahlias- 2. Compact and low growing; obtained at yard and garden show. Put in pots in sunroom in late March; transplant later into yard. As of late April, both are growing in the pots. First bloom, early June 2006.  Still blooming, mid-Oct. 2006.  Blooming June 2007.  I left all the dahlias in the ground last winter.

Crocus Sativus, Saffron Crocus

Full sun, well-drained soil; divide every few years. Purple with orange-red tongues. Planted backyard, primarily main bed, few in front of roses near back fence and right side bed 9/14/05 (received 9/13/05). Blooms started approx. Nov. 4th, 2005.

Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web,' Speckled Japanese Aralia

To 60" x 60" wide Part sun to deep shade; plant in backyard, left side bed. Speckled palm-like leaves Plant Delights for Delivery the week of March 6, 2005 (prepaid Jan. 2005); arrived 3/9 and planted 3/10. looks good, but compact 2006 (1 foot tall apprx.)

Clematis recta Serious Black

( C. recta ‘Lime Close’) For those who have purchased the purple foliaged forms of Clematis recta, only to be vastly disappointed in its washy, slightly purple green leaf, we offer this truly exceptional selection we originally received from Green Farm Plants in the U.K. and subsequently named by us. Its non-vining stems emerge in mid-spring in lusty tones of deep midnight purple, retaining this for most of the spring, then fading slightly with some green overtones. The columns of stems rise to 4 ft. and are capped by lovely clusters of small, bright white flowers and later, very pretty, translucent seed heads, though at Heronswood, we cut this back in mid-summer to renew the effects from foliage. Consider staking early on. A truly fantastic plant. Ranunculaceae Garden origin.

Sun to part sun; 120 inches; (syn: Ampelaster carolinianus) ; woody aster that climbs...fragrant pink flowers from late summer into the fall. Give it a trellis, or let it socialize in the border. SE US native; some reports it doesn’t flower in NW or England due to lack of summer heat.

Zone 8a; very thick small leaves that are tightly arranged on a compact evergreen shrub to 3’ tall and wide; full sun and well drained soil; tolerant of drought; white flowers in summer followed by white berries; aromatic foliage.
Planted in Backyard in patio area created by removing pavers in mid-August 2005.

Osmanthus heterophyllus Goshiki, Goshiki False Holly

Evergreen shrub, compact, mounding, grows to 5 ft (1.5 m) high and 4 ft (1.2 m) wide. New growth pinkish bronze, spiny mature leaves have a mixture of green, gold, and cream areas. Part shade prefers fertile, moist, well drained, acid soil, but tolerates higher pH soils. Hardy to USDA Zone 6. Goshiki: Japanese, 5-colored, a reference to the mottled leaves of many colors Great Plant Pick; tough shrub, variegated leaves with pink and orange maturing to yellow; spring flowers insignificant; slow-growing compact habit; 4-10 feet tall and wide; zones 7-9; full to partial sun. Portland Nursery, Dec. 2005; planted front edging strip in front yard. Drought tolerant once established but benefits from some summer water.

Oxalis regnellii ‘Atropurpurea’, Purple Oxalis

I think I got this at Portland Nursery; planted backyard left side shade in path near patio. I did not enter the info at planting (may-june?) because it seemed to die right away; however, in mid-July I noticed it was back blooming like crazy. Doing well August 2005. Still blooming mid-September 2005. Bloomed through first half of Dec. 2005; only defeated by actual snow, Dec. 19th.
“The book on this plant is part-shade (at least protection from the hot afternoon sun), rich moist sandy soil, zone 7-11, height 6”-10” spreading to 12” spacing 9”-12”. The winter’s cold will knock it down to the ground, but don’t worry, it will be back in the spring. This species does not have freestanding flowers, which tends to create a droopy look in certain instances. However, the plant’s beautiful white blooms create a colorful look for any garden. It flowers best in the spring and then occasionally through the summer.”
